largesquarecuffsandlargeflapstothepockets,passedalongon
hiswaytohisbreakfast.
Thecoffee-roomhadnootheroccupant,thatforenoon,thanthe
gentlemaninbrown.Hisbreakfast-tablewasdrawnbeforethe
fire,andashesat,withitslightshiningonhim,waitingforthe
meal,hesatsostill,thathemighthavebeensittingforhisportrait.
Veryorderlyandmethodicalhelooked,withahandoneach
knee,andaloudwatchtickingasonoroussermonunderhis
flappedwaistcoat,asthoughitpitteditsgravityandlongevity
againstthelevityandevanescenceofthebriskfire.Hehadagood
leg,andwasalittlevainofit,forhisbrownstockingsfittedsleek
andclose,andwereofafinetexturehisshoesandbuckles,too,
thoughplain,weretrim.Heworeanoddlittlesleekcrispflaxen
wig,settingveryclosetohishead:whichwig,itistobepresumed,
wasmadeofhair,butwhichlookedfarmoreasthoughitwere
spunfromfilamentsofsilkorglass.Hislinen,thoughnotofa
